Chapter Nineteen

Jane

“Hey, hey!” Stephanie bellowed from the living room. “It’s on. The reception’s coming in. It’s on!”

They rushed into the living room, leaving the breakfast mess for later and took up seats around the room while some stood. There was a text that went out to those who were linked into the CDC website for updates. When Stephanie had gone with Brian this morning to feed the horses, her phone had alerted her that there was an important update that would be announced at nine a.m. Roman questioned how many other pressers they’d probably already missed since they moved into her father’s home because of the bad reception. Now, they were all gathered with hopeful expressions. Jane wasn’t sure if they should get their hopes up. She reserved hers for smaller triumphs like having hot food or a shower.

A doctor in a white lab coat came on, and he looked just awful. His eyes were red-rimmed, his pallor ashen and sweaty.

“Why’d they bring out the fucking crypt keeper for this shit?” Stephanie asked.

“Stephanie, watch your language, please,” her father reprimanded, to which her arch enemy bristled and returned her attention to the television. When Jane looked across the room at Roman, he was frowning as if disappointed.

The doctor on the television introduced himself and his team as being in charge at the CDC, while others behind the podium were from the President’s cabinet.

Brian said, “I think this is a green screen of the White House press room. I don’t think they’re actually there.”

“Maybe from a bunker somewhere?” Roman speculated as the man began.

“We’re seeing an increase in the number of infected across the globe,” he announced after droning for a while about the people on the stage. Jane gave up trying to memorize their names. Sometimes others were on; then they weren’t. She assumed those ones were now dead. “We believe we are in the peak, or what the medical community would refer to as the peak season in this virus.”

“What’s that mean?” Harper asked from the sofa.

As if he’d heard her, the doctor answered, “In layman terms, it means that the sickness is in its highest contagious stages with the most infected so far. We need people to stay in, don’t go out, make sure you keep your lights off at night. If you do need to go out, please use caution, wear protective layers, masks, gloves, etcetera. Only go out during the day. Don’t take chances. Report if you can the infected in your area. Take sick loved ones to the infection zones. Personnel there will take care of them for you. Do not attempt to care for them yourselves. As we all know now, some of the sick ones could be high-strung and could harm you or those you care about. Please just take them to a quarantine zone for the sick.”

“Get real! High-strung?” Brian complained.

“Shh,” Dez shushed him.

“Like most viruses, we expect this to die off naturally when the weather improves. The flu virus will peak in this same season and essentially go dormant when the weather warms up.
